    Some thoughts:

    • Boot Repair functionality has been removed from Rescatux. Many people, somehow, were using Boot Repair (by default) inside Rescatux while we don’t support it.
If you feel Rescapp does not cover all the Boot Repair functionality you can fill a bug for a RFE (Request for Enhacement).
    • Rescapp and chntpw are now installed from a Repo. It should be virtually identical to 0.41b1 release. If something doesn’t work as well as before please report a bug so that we can fix it.
    • This is the last build based on Debian 8 (Jessie).

    Important notice:

    • If you want to use the UEFI options make sure you use DD or another equivalent tool (Rufus in ‘Direct image’ mode, usb imagewriter, etc.) to put Rescatux in your USB
    • If you want to use UEFI options make sure you boot your Rescatux device in UEFI mode
    • If you want to use Rescatux make sure you temporarly disable Secure Boot. Rescatux does not support booting in Secure Boot mode but it should be able to fix most of the UEFI Secure Boot problems if booted in Non Secure Boot mode.

More things I want to do before the stable release are:

Let’s hope it happens sooner than later.

About other downloads. As this is the first time I develop Super Grub2 Disk out of source code (well, probably not the first time, but the first time in ages) I have not been able to build these other downloads: coreboot, i386-efi, i386-pc, ieee1275, x86_64-efi, standalone coreboot, standalone i386-efi, standalone ieee1275. bfree has helped on this matter and with his help we might have those builds in next releases. If you want such builds drop a mail in the mailing list so that we aware of that need.

    • (Devel) New supergrub-official-release script: Build main files, source code and everything zip file from a single script in order to ease official Super Grub
      2 Disk releases.

    Changes since 2.02s4 version:

    • Stop trying to chainload devices under UEFI and improve the help people get in the case of a platform mismatch
    • (Devel) Properly support source based built grub-mkfont binary.
    • New options were added to chainload directly either /ntldr or /bootmgr thanks to ntldr command. They only work in BIOS mode.

    Changes since 2.02s3 version:

    • Using upstream grub-2.02-beta3 tag as the new base for Super Grub2 Disk’s grub.
    • Major improvement in Windows OS detection (based on BCD) Windows Vista, 7, …
    • Major improvement in Windows OS detection (based on ntldr) Windows XP, 2000, …

Changes since 2.02s2 beta 1 version:

    • (Devel) grub-mkstandalone was deleted because we no longer use it
    • Updated (and added) Copyright notices for 2015
    • New option: ‘Disks and Partitions (Chainload)’ adapted from Smx work
    • Many files were rewritten so that they only loop between devices that actually need to be searched into.
This enhacement will make Super Grub2 Disk faster.
    • Remove Super Grub2 Disk own devices from search by default. Added an option to be able to enable/disable the Super Grub2 Disk own devices search.

    2.02s2 beta 1 changelog:

    • Updated grub 2.02 build to commit: 8e5bc2f4d3767485e729ed96ea943570d1cb1e45
    • Updated documentation for building Super Grub2 Disk
    • Improvement on upstream grub (d29259b134257458a98c1ddc05d2a36c677ded37 – test: do not stop after first file test or closing bracket) will probably make Super Grub2 Disk run faster.
    • Added new grub build scripts so that Super Grub2 Disk uses its own built versions of grub and not the default system / distro / chroot one.
    • Ensure that Mac OS X entries are detected ok thanks to Users dir. This is because Grub2 needs to emulate Mac OS X kernel so that it’s detected as a proper boot device on Apple computers.
    • Thanks to upstream grub improvement now Super Grub2 Disk supports booting in EFI mode when booted from a USB device / hard disk. Actually SG2D was announced previously to boot from EFI from a USB device while it only booted from a cdrom.

    2.02s1 beta 1 changelog:

    • Added new option: “Enable all native disk drivers” so that you can try to load: SATA, PATA and USB hard disks (and their partitions) as native disk drives. This is experimental.
    • Removed no longer needed options: “Enable USB” and “Enable PATA”.
    • “Search floppy” and “Search cdrom” options were moved into “Extra GRUB2 functionality menu”. At the same time “Extra Search functionality” menu was removed.
    • Added new straight-forward option: “Enable GRUB2’s RAID and LVM support”.
    • “List devices/partitions” was renamed to “Print devices/partitions”.
    • “Everything” option was renamed to “Detect and show boot methods”.
    • “Everything +” option was removed to avoid confusions.
    • Other minor improvements in the source code.
    • Updated translation files. Now most translations are pending.
    • Updated INSTALL instructions.

Finally you can check all the detailed changes at our GIT commits.

Thank you – Hall of fame

I want to thank in alphabetical order:

    • The upstream Grub crew. I’m subscribed to both help-grub and grub-devel and I admire the work you do there.
    • Necrosporus for his insistence on making Super Grub2 Disk smaller.

And I cannot forget about thanking bTactic, the enterprise where I work at and that hosts our site.

Some thoughts about Super Grub2 Disk development

    Super Grub2 Disk development ideas

I think we won’t improve Super Grub2 Disk too much. We will try to stick to official Grub2 stable releases. Unless a new feature that it’s not included in official Grub2 stable release is needed in order to give additional useful functionalities to Super Grub2 Disk.

I have added some scripts to Super Grub2 Disk build so that writing these pieces of news is more automatic and less prone to errors. Check them out in git repo as you will not find them in 2.02s8 source code.

Old idea: I don’t know when but I plan to readapt some scripts from os-prober. That will let us detect more operating systems. Not sure when though. I mean, it’s not something that worries me because it does not affect too many final users. But, well, it’s something new that I hadn’t thought about.

Again, please send us feedback on what you think it’s missing on Super Grub2 Disk.

    Rescatux development

I want to focus on Rescatux development on the next months so that we have an stable release before the end of 2017. Now I need to finish adding UEFI features (most finished), fix the scripts that generate Rescatux source code (difficult) and write much documentation.

More information about Super Grub2 Disk

Rescapp 0.51 beta 1 has been released.

Rescapp 0.51 beta 1 has been released.

Rescapp is the Rescatux main program. It is a nice wizard that helps you in your rescue tasks.

For the last few weeks I have been working on separating Rescapp from Rescatux.
That way Rescapp is an standalone program and can be used on other distros.

Rescatux build will be also be more elegant.

This is a source code release so it’s not aimed at final users.

It’s rather aimed at expert users and GNU/Linux distribution package maintainers.
Despite the 0.51b1 version this is the first beta release of Rescapp so any feedback is welcome.

Finally you should note that Rescapp assumes that the user under you run Rescapp can run the sudo command without sudo asking for a password. So you might need to modify your sudoers file.

For the time being Rescapp and Rescatux will have the same version as their development is highly tied.

    Rescatux development

I want to focus on Rescatux development on the next months so that we have an stable release before the end of 2017. Now I need to finish adding UEFI features (most finished), fix the scripts that generate Rescatux source code (difficult) and write much documentation.

    Some thoughts:

I couldn’t have released an stable Rescatux without UEFI options so I had to add them. So here there are. Please test them and give us feedback either on the mailing list or in the bugs. Depending on how these new options replace Boot Repair functionality I will remove it from Rescatux. Many people, somehow, are using Boot Repair inside Rescatux while we don’t support it and that should be fixed in the next Rescatux stable release.

This new beta release comes with new exciting UEFI options:

    • Update UEFI order
    • Create a new UEFI Boot entry
    • UEFI Partition Status
    • Fake Microsoft Windows UEFI
    • Hide Microsoft Windows UEFI
    • Reinstall Microsoft Windows EFI
    • Check UEFI Boot

You can take a look at the new UEFI options on Rescatux – New UEFI options explained video (The video is a live session, it was not scripted in advance, and that means that it might be longer than needed and maybe boring. You have been warned 😉 . )

The Youtube description has the specific links for each one of the options.

I will explain these in detail here. This will probably go into the features page in the future.

    * New option: Update UEFI order option
** Show all available UEFI boot entries and lets you order them

    * New option: Create a new UEFI Boot entry.
** Select an EFI file among those present in the ESP partition and add them to the UEFI boot
** Make it the default boot entry

    * New option: UEFI Partition Status to know if an ESP partition is a proper ESP partition or not
** Checks if fdisk detects it as an esp partition
** Checks esp flag on the partition
** Checks boot flag on the partition
** Checks if there's a valid filesystem (fat12,fat16 or fat32) on the partition
** Checks if the partition can be mounted
** Checks if the partition' hard disk type is either gpt or msdos

    * New option: Fake Microsoft Windows UEFI boot entry
** Select an EFI file and overwrite the Microsoft EFI files
** Rename it to 'Windows Boot Manager' too.

    * New option: Hide Microsoft Windows UEFI boot entry and define default fallback one.
** Select an EFI file and overwrite the default EFI one
** Make sure to delete the default Microsoft Windows ones
** This should be useful for fault UEFIs as the HP EliteBook 8460p or HP EliteBook 8460p laptops

    * New option: Reinstall Microsoft Windows EFI
** It copies UEFI files from Windows installation into EFI System Partiton (ESP)
** It adds a new 'Windows Boot Manager' entry and makes it the default one.
** Unfortunately this option is unable to regenerate BCD so it's only useful when you only overwrite or lose the UEFI files

There haven been also many usability improvements to make the life of the final user easier:

    * Now EFI System partitions are shown properly in the Rescapp menues
    * Now partition types are shown in partition dialogs in the Rescapp menues
    * Now partition flags are shown in partition dialogs in the Rescapp menues
    * Now partition os-prober long names are shown in partition dialogs in the Rescapp menues
    * Show 'Unknown GNU/Linux distro' if we ever fail to parse an /etc/issue file.
    * order.py: Usability improvement. When moving entries the last entry moved keeps selected.

    * Rescatux width has been increased to 800 pixels.
    * Added AFD scanning tecnology adapted for Spanish systems.
    * Many grubeasy option improvements (Now handles UEFI too)

    • WICD has been replaced by network-manager-gnome. That makes easier to connect to wired and wireless networks.
    • It is no longer based on Debian Unstable (sid) branch.

    Distro facts:

    • Packages versions for this release can be found at Rescatux 0.40b11 packages.
    • It’s based mainly on Debian Jessie (Stable). Some packages are from Debian Unstable (sid). Some packages are from Debian stretch.

Don’t forget that you can use:

    Help Rescatux project:

I think we can expect four months maximum till the new stable Rescatux is ready. Helping on these tasks is appreciated:

    • Making a youtube video for the new options.
    • Make sure documentation for the new options is right.
    • Make snapshots for new options documentation so that they don’t lack images.

    Super Grub2 Disk 2.02s8 released

Super Grub2 Disk 2.02s8 stable is here.

Super GRUB2 Disk is a live cd that helps you to boot into most any Operating System (OS) even if you cannot boot into it by normal means.

    A new stable release

The former Super Grub2 Disk stable release was 2.02s7 version and released on February 2017 (1 month ago) . New features or changes since previous stable version are:

    • Updated grub 2.02 build to tag: 2.02~rc2 . This is the release candidate for final stable 2.02 upstream Grub release. Please use this build to give them (upstream Grub) feedback on this version. It’s advised to ask here before reporting to them so that we discard the bug being a Super Grub2 Disk specific one.
    • Thanks to a Necrosporus suggestion now default theme starfield is no longer included. Images are now smaller. E.g. the hybrid image size it’s 19.3 MB while former version image size was 22 MB.

    • (Devel) supergrub-meta-mkrescue: Build everything into releases directory in order to make source code more clean.

Some thoughts about Super Grub2 Disk development

    Super Grub2 Disk development ideas

There are two main improvements than can be made to Super Grub2 Disk in the next releases:

    • Fix md5sum files associated to iso files so that they don’t have to full path.

Super GRUB2 Disk is a live cd that helps you to boot into most any Operating System (OS) even if you cannot boot into it by normal means.

    A new stable release

The former Super Grub2 Disk stable release was 2.00s5 version and released on October 2016 (3 months ago) . New features or changes since previous stable version are:

    • Added Russian language
    • Improved Arch Linux initramfs detection
    • Added i386-efi build support
Most of you won’t need this image. There are very few machines which specificially need i386-efi boot.
    • Added i386-efi to the hybrid iso
Now the hybrid iso is even more powerful by being able to autodetect i386-efi and load its modules.
    • Grub itself is translated when a language is selected.
That means that the strings about such as “Use the up and down keys to select …” from grub itself will be also translated into your own language (if upstream Grub2 supports it)
    • Added loopback.cfg file (non officially supported)
Some people would like to be able to chainload into Super Grub2 Disk scripts from another Super Grub2 Disk or a custom Grub2 Disk. Now you can do it by doing a configfile to our loopback.cfg. However this way of working is not officially supported. So do not ask for support if it does not work as you expect to.

Changelog (since former 2.00s2 stable release)

    Changes since 2.02s5 version:

    • Added Russian language
    • Improved Arch Linux initramfs detection
    • Added i386-efi build support
    • Added i386-efi to the hybrid iso
    • Grub itself is translated when a language is selected
    • Added loopback.cfg file (non officially supported)
    • (Devel) sgrub.pot updated to latest strings
    • (Devel) Added grub-build-004-make-check so that we ensure the build works
    • (Devel) Make sure linguas.sh is built when running ‘grub-build-002-clean-and-update’
    • (Devel) Updated upstream Super Grub2 Disk repo on documentation
    • (Devel) Move core supergrub menu under menus/sgd
    • (Devel) Use sg2d_directory as the base super grub2 disk directory variable
    • (Devel) New supergrub-sourcecode script that creates current git branch source code tar.gz
    • (Devel) New supergrub-all-zip-file script: Makes sure a zip file of everything is built.
    • (Devel) supergrub-meta-mkrescue: Build everything into releases directory in order to make source code more clean.

If you want to translate into your language please check TRANSLATION file at source code to learn how to translate into your language.

Thank you – Hall of fame

I want to thank in alphabetical order:

    • bfree (Niall Wash): For his work in readding the i386-efi support and for being there when I did live development streams.
    • jim945: For his work on Russian language and improving Arch Linux initramfs detection.
    • schierlm: For his pull request for adding loopback.cfg support.

The person who writes this article is adrian15 and he added some scripts for easing official releases.

And I cannot forget about thanking bTactic, the enterprise where I work at and that hosts our site.

Some thoughts about Super Grub2 Disk development

    Super Grub2 Disk development ideas

There are two main improvements than can be made to Super Grub2 Disk in the next releases:

    • Fix md5sum files associated to iso files so that they don’t have to full path.
    • Use new upstream Grub release. We still use the upstream 2.02 beta 3 version. According to a recent announce a new Grub will be released on next February.

Now I need to finish adding UEFI features, fix the scripts that generate Rescatux source code (difficult) and write much documentation.

More information about Super Grub2 Disk

    Super Grub2 Disk 2.02s5 released

Super Grub2 Disk 2.02s5 stable is here.

Super GRUB2 Disk is a live cd that helps you to boot into most any Operating System (OS) even if you cannot boot into it by normal means.

    A new stable release

The former Super Grub2 Disk stable release was 2.00s4 version and released on March 2016 (7 months ago) . New features or changes since previous stable version are:

    • Make UEFI only options and BIOS/CMS only options clear.
If you boot in UEFI mode you are not able to chainload partitions (Operating systems installed in BIOS mode). Now we make that fact clear by prepending BIOS-BOOT-REQUIRED to these entries. Same thing applies in the reverse case. If you boot in BIOS mode you are not able to load EFI files (Operating systems installed in UEFI mode). Now we make that fact clear by prepending UEFI-BOOT-REQUIRED to these entries. If you insist on booting those entries Super Grub2 Disk refuses to boot them and explains why.
    • New option: Chainload directly /ntldr or /bootmgr.
(Note this new option will only work in BIOS/CSM mode). This option chainloads Windows’ ntldr or Windows’ bootmgr. It should be useful if you have somehow corrupted your Windows partition boot record. It might also be useful if you clone Windows into another hard disk and it refuses to boot.

Changelog (since former 2.00s2 stable release)

If you want to translate into your language please check TRANSLATION file at source code to learn how to translate into your language.

Thank you – Hall of fame

I want to thank in alphabetical order:

    • bfree (Niall Wash): For his work in adding the code that highlights options that need to be booted in BIOS mode if you boot from UEFI and viceversa. Also for his work on building i386-efi versions of Super Grub2 Disk and other flavours which we will probably use in next beta versions of Super Grub2 Disk.

The person who writes this article is adrian15 and he’s amazed he did not use ntldr command before because while doing UEFI tests it does not appear at all.

And I cannot forget about thanking bTactic, the enterprise where I work at and that hosts our site.

Some thoughts about Super Grub2 Disk development

    Super Grub2 Disk development ideas

There are two main improvements than can be made to Super Grub2 Disk in the next releases:

    • Use bfree code so that we can build again files for i386-efi architecture.
    • Use new upstream Grub release. We still use the upstream 2.02 beta 3 version. According to a recent announce a new Grub will be released on next February.

I want to focus on Rescatux development on the next months so that we have an stable release before the end of 2016. Now I need to add two UEFI features, fix the scripts that generate Rescatux source code (difficult) and write much documentation.

    Rescatux 0.40 beta 11 released

Rescatux 0.40 beta 11 – Filesystem check shows its progress

    Downloads:

Rescatux 0.40b11 size is about 671 Megabytes.

    Some thoughts:

This release comes with one of the most exciting improvements in many years: Most of the options show its subtasks progress while working. That means that the final user will not doubt about Rescatux being frozen or not while he sees an apparently frozen screen.

I have been working on making all the source code available but as I have mentioned on the Debian Live mailing list it is not easy.

Another big improvement towards usability is renaming the older ‘Not detected’ partitions to: ‘Windows / Data / Other’ so that people don’t get confused. Many people think their windows is not being detected while there is a windows there.

I guess the partition selection entries could be improved in the future so that they show the actual Windows name (Thanks to os-prober algorithms) and also the filesystem type.

Many other smalls bug fixes have been done. You can check the git log for more details.

I have decided not to release stable release till I add one or two UEFI related options. The one about ordering UEFI boot entries would be there for sure. The current roadmap had been planned for 2012 so it needs some update. It’s true that current Rescatux supports booting from an UEFI system and that if you had already installed grub-efi it reinstalls it in its UEFI partition. But it’s also true that one or two more UEFI options are needed so that magazines stop advising to use Boot Repair inside Rescatux.

More things I want to do before the stable release are:

    • Make clear that ‘Extra tools’ are not supported renaming them to ‘Extra tools (Non supported)’
    • Internal documentation updated
    • A new Rescatux website (Optional)
    • A new Rescatux tutorial video or videos (Optional)
    • Add more AFD functionality

Let’s hope it happens sooner than later.

UEFI feedback is still welcome. Specially if the Debian installation disks work for you but not the Rescatux ones.
