  • Super Grub2 Disk 1.99b1 is included (Actually it boots from it not from isolinux)
  • It autodetects 64bit systems and loads the appropiate kernel accordingly. This will fix most of the errors about not being able to restore Grub.

  • Blank Windows password
  • Boot Info Script

Changelog:

  • Hard disk order dialog rewritten into python
  • UI was improved with some icons
  • Tried to improve Fix of Windows MBR option

Some comments about the release:

This release does not add any new useful options compared to Rescatux 0.29 so you are not advised to renew your Rescatux disk if you already have Rescatux 0.29.

This is the second release of the Rescatux 0.30 series. It is a beta because there are some many changes in the UI. Please comment your experience on the Rescatux forum. Please say your word at Super Grub mailing list or try to find us at Rescatux chat.

The rewrite of a hard disk dialog into Python usually it is not a reason to make a release not even a beta release. But… it is because the current dialog is quite a nightmare to understand. Now you choose a hard disk press on UP button and it moves upwards.

Now that I have managed to implement such a python dialog I think the rest of the Rescatux 0.30 development will be easier. It’s interesting that some people think that Rescatux lacks an application for installing packages (synaptic). I will think about it.

I have also tried to improve the Fix of Windows MBR option but install-mbr command is deceiving me. I might finally rely on syslinux and setting up active partitions.

Waiting for your feedback!

Programming with Python is very fast as it is an interpreted language I can debug at run time. Python is also very powerful because I can write in an object-oriented way. And QT seems to me one of the best UI toolkits. If I am foolish enough I might switch from LXDE to Razor-QT and… you know what… I might drop Iceweasel (Firefox) to include Rekonq.

Waiting for your feedback!

Some comments about the release:
I have hacked the original chntpw so that it accepts -b option to automatically blank passwords. You can find its source code and diff file under chntpw-NG section in
Source code and other downloads.

This is the first release that blanks password. Please comment your experience on the Rescatux forum.

Useful Rescatux Options:

  • Restore Grub to the MBR
  • Update Grub Configuration
  • Filesystem check (Fix forced)
  • Fix of Windows MBR (Currently in beta status)
  • Boot Info Script

Changelog:

  • Added Support option: Share log on forum
  • Size was shrinked from 371 MB to 302 MB thanks to using LXDE as the default desktop.
  • Desktop was tied up a bit. Now every rescatux file is found at rescapp folder and there is a Rescapp shorcut in the desktop just in case you close Rescapp.

Some comments about the release:
I have postponed the work on the option that reset windows passwords till its author replies me about how to hack it.
This release has only one new useful option: Boot Info Script but, as far as I know, it is a great one because it would be the first live cd to include in it the boot info script.

As you have seen we have dropped the cut gnome and we use right now lxde. Every Rescatux file has been moved to rescapp inside the Desktop. So there might be bugs due to that. If you find any of those please comment on the Rescatux forum.

Useful Rescatux Options:

  • Restore Grub to the MBR
  • Update Grub Configuration
  • Filesystem check (Fix forced)
  • Fix of Windows MBR (Currently in beta status)

Changelog:

  • Grub install was updated to handle (Open)SUSE instalations with default (Open)SUSE grub2 package.

Some comments about the release:
I was supposed to work on the option that reset windows passwords but I have prefered to do a quick release with that fix to OpenSUSE installations that use grub2. It is interesting how OpenSUSE tweaks grub-install original behaviour so that you are forced to use yast or yast2 to reinstall it to your MBR. I just hope that Debian Live handles NTFS mounts ok so that I can run chntpw without too much hassless from the live cd.

I would like to confirm that grub install option does work well in (Open)SUSE (when you have grub2 package installed). Please comment on the Rescatux forum.
