Happy 2012 April Fools’ Day

Update 1st April 2015 : You might be wondering why in 2015 or a later year you are suffering this same joke even without using Super Grub Disk 0.9800 version. The reason is that latest Super Grub2 Disk versions integrate this special functionality but it only triggers on April 1st days unlike the 0.9800 version joke which was triggered everyday.

He, he he! XD

If you have tried Super Grub Disk 0.9800 yesterday you will have noticed that were unable to write NO when asked if you wanted to delete your partitions and folders.

You might have been asked to delete your WINDOWS folder:

Or you might have been asked to delete some of your Gnu/Linux files:

Just to find that MFSTH4CK3R wanted to delete your stupid LAINUX TOY OS.

But finally it was just an April Fools Day joke:

Some more facts about the joke:

  • This is not Super Grub Disk (based on Grub1) but Super Grub2 Disk.
  • The script was designed to find no more than 23 folders or so… that meant that you would be only suffering for about 40 seconds.
  • 40 seconds time was choosen so that people didn’t have time to press ctrl+alt+del
  • 40 seconds time was choosen so that could use the disk as SG2D anyways (Having to wait till it loops into all your hard disks and filesystems is not funny the third time you see it).
  • I sent the release to Freecode (freshmeat) March 31 but instead of being published on April 1 it get published in March 31.
  • I also sent the piece of news to Barrapunto (the Spanish slashdot).
  • I don’t have time to resurrect SGD and it makes no sense with Grub2 having scripting and so on.
  • There happens to be a patch for Grub1 to make it support btrfs.
  • You can chainload Grub2 from Grub1. (/boot/grub/core.img)
  • Restore Grub2 from Grub1 with an special dd command? Might be. But not sure if it’s even possible.

And that,s it. Now I have to decide if I remove the SGD 0.9800 release of if I left it there so that I can drive people to Super Grub2 Disk and Rescatux.

  1. Thanks for making me waste a blank CD I could have used more usefully for a much needed GRUB2 iso CD to cleanly restore my Windows XP mbr!

    1. Where have you downloaded it? The download is no longer valid nowadays.
This cd that you are complaining it is actually a GRUB2 iso so you can boot into Windows XP and try to fix it from inside it.
      Maybe installing EasyBCD from Windows.

  2. You people almost gave me heart attack this morning. Defo more efficinet wake up call than strong espresso.

  3. That’s a good one buddy! Nearly died on a heart attack, then I remembered, I don’t have a WindowsOS on that computer XD ! Thanks for the adrenaline rush !

  4. Haha, was booting from flash disk. had to unscrew my harddrive and boot again from flash to find out what was going on

  5. Imagine the scenario : I was cloning a HDD containing the work of all my life, and this message appeared. I almost had an heart attack !!! 5 more seconds and I would be passed ! Finally I was very happy that I was just a joke, It took me hours to recover a normal state. By the way, thank you for the dev of this program (not the joke). This is really an essential product.

  6. well… I must admit… this is one hell of a prank.. * hats off *.. damn prank hit me today for the first time on a usb stick install I was using to boot up a Debian server.. well done really… seldom ever get “caught” like this.

Thank you for the experience.. and thanks for such a useful tool

  7. This was a very well done April Fools/Easter Egg script. Even six years later. I only use SGD2 for 3 years now and I never seen this TILL NOW. Freaked me out enough to get online and come here. Makes me wonder now what other hidden eggs scripts Adrian15 might have put on SGD2?

    1. I once thought about upgrading this Super Grub2 Disk April Fools egg so that you got something similar to the Petya virus but I, somehow, discarded it.
You should actually check Rescatux for a different April Fools egg. It’s going to be a multi-cultural one. The Spanish one (28th December) and the English one (1st April).

  8. Thanks for the early morning heart attack!

Although I did manage to do a hard shutdown a few times before coming to the “April fools” page. Could see that I could still startup other known partitions. Finally I thought I’ll let the whole thing run while recording it with my phone. Came to the “April fools” page and swore & laughed at the same time! 🙂

  9. Thanks for the early morning heart attack!

damn prank hit me today for the first time on a usb stick install I was using to boot up my home pc for a quite a time.. never got caught like this, so i was stuck for a few seconds, before realized that smth is wrong.

Although I did manage to do a hard shutdown before final note.
You made me to unscrew all of my drives and to boot from live usb to investigate this problem further. There I had an idea that it’s a boot record virus, so I wiped all of them from all disks I had connected before. Of course I’m happy that all of my data is at place, but…

To conclude this story I want to tell you, adrian15 that you shoot yourself in the foot, because before this accident super grub2 was a reliable tool I choose to use instead of default grub I and not to mess with Windows dual boot setup, now I have no clue what to choose instead. And I’ll better mess with setting up grub manually every time after reinstalling bunch of systems, than turning pale in front of covorkers that all data is gone.
Of course, it’s my fault, too, but it’s not possible to check every tool on web for any harmful behaviour.
Now I ask everyone, is there clean & reliable tools without such or even more harmful code? And how to check that?

    1. Super Grub2 Disk is free-as-freedom software. You can fork it (or pay someone for doing it) and remove that code.

Or, if you have an usb based on latest beta (I’m not sure you can mount partitions on the current stable disk) you can easily edit the grub.cfg file https://github.com/supergrub/supergrub/blob/d5ad5697a56263fa1b350d1f58e4f739e727c9e3/menus/grub.cfg#L24-L28 so it configfiles directly into the main.cfg.

It’s interesting that you use SG2D as a daily driver because, I guess, your distribution Grub was was not installed properly in your hard disk.

You having to unscrew all of your drives made me a bit sad so I might consider to soften the prank for a future release based on Grub 2.06.

Thank you for your feedback! I’m sure many more other future SG2D users will appreciate it.

than turning pale in front of covorkers that all data is gone.

It would be nice if you could expand on your story. Were you using a home usb stick in your work place? Or were you having your early morning heart attack in your home while your coworkers saw/helped you via videoconference?

  10. Hello,

I experienced this “April Fool’s Day joke” already last year.
Shall I be aware of a repetition this year? If this is the case, is there some possibility to avoid it? Otherwise, I want to ask whether the it will be possible to start the computer from the disk at least later on the same day and to work under Linux regularly. I do not remember about this aspect from last year anymore.

    1. Yes, this happens every day.
Newer versions higher than 2.06s1 (to be released) won’t have this joke.

Anyways… once you experience the joke the usual SG2D main menu it’s bring to you and you can use SG2D without any problem.

  11. That was indeed a scary moment this morning, booting into Linux. Since the keyboard was not responding as I was pressing Esc, I decided to unplug the usb key where SuperGrub2 is installed, hoping to stop the ‘destructive action’. Since I couldn’t boot into Linux, i decided to get into Windows to do my office work since I have dual boot. I was somewhat relieved that I was able to get into Windows but I started wondering what happened to my SG2 disk. So I searched online for answers and I found this post, so I was very relieved. In any case, thank you for the software and this April Fools prank was also a reminder that I have to do my first backup for 2021 and I will do it today.
