Super Grub Disk is outdated

Super Grub Disk is outdated.

Please use one of the following tools:

  1. Rescatux. Tool for fixing Grub.
  2. Super Grub2 Disk. Tool for booting into your system.

If you wish to download this old 0.9799 here there is a torrent link (visit it so that you can download the actual link) with all the versions in their various formats: cdrom, floppy, usb and source code:

Some further explanations to why there is a torrent link.

Opening in Windows and seeing everything in one line? Shift on File. Right click. Open With. Wordpad.
== Short explanation ==

Super Grub Disk is outdated.

Please use one of the following tools:

Rescatux ( https://www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux/ ) . Tool for fixing Grub.
Super Grub2 Disk ( https://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/ ) . Tool for booting into your system.

== Long explanation ==

Super Grub Disk was outdated on July 21, 2011.
People still are downloading it because either they don't know that Super Grub2 Disk is there (just using old links) or because it is still useful.

If it is still useful please encourage Rescatux development to add these (recover or fix) features from original Super Grub Disk that you are missing.
Or encourage Super Grub2 Disk development (when they are boot features).

As a final "file in a bottle" I save here:

* Cdrom, floppy, usb and source code versions for Super Grub Disk 0.9799 version.

I discard saving:

* Auto Super Grub Disk (it was based on an old version and even worse you need the Microsoft Windows system to make it work)
* Old versions of Super Grub Disk (I see no use on sharing them)
* Lalitera multidistrox torrent. Binefar multidistrox torrent.
These were modified versions of Knoppix or Gparted that used Super Grub Disk to boot both Super Grub Disk itself and the original system.
They are pretty outdated and based on old Super Grub Disk technology.

Finally I rename Super Grub Disk as supergrub1_09799 in the downloads folder and in the torrent filename so that nobody thinks that this is Super Grub2 Disk.

So the total download is about 25 MB.

Yes, the purpose to discourage people to download it. But if they want to download it they have the full toolkit.

  1. Instalé (a fin de conocer mejor) Ubuntu 11.04
junto a Windows 7.

    Gracias,

    RENE

  2. i get that it’s outdated, but it would be nice if you kept a download link up for the final version. Outdated doesn’t mean unused. Anyways, thanks for the super grub2 disc download as i needed that aswell. 🙂

  3. Downloaded SuperGrub2 yesterday. Doesn’twork on my system. Causes horrible mechanical noises. Looked at openSUSE support database today and it says use SuperGrub but don’t try SuperGrub2. Oh dear!

  4. I do not know whether it’s just me or if everybody else encountering issues with your website.
It appears like some of the text in your posts are running off the screen. Can someone else
please provide feedback and let me know if this is happening to them as well?
This may be a issue with my internet browser because I’ve
    had this happen before. Thanks

  5. Back in 2007 I was having trouble with legacy grub misbehaving (bugs) and I posted a help me
description on some forum. Well, I only got one response and it was Adrian15 who sent me
some legacy grub source code patches which indeed fixed my problem. Well, now years later and
after five years of my most recent 24/7 linux server running without an upgrade I have finally gotten
around to converting to 64bit slackware. My trusty old legacy grub (patched five years ago to handle ext4) misbehaved again. I even tried grub2 which also misbehaved. After a futile bit of debugging I tried the legacy super grub disk and after the usual root(hd0,0), setup(hd0) installation, the boot process started working. (I also replaced the contents of the grub directory
with the grub stages etc from the super grub disk – I figured Adrian15 had probably done whatever patches were needed to make it work right). Anyway, I want to say thanks again to Adrian15 for
bailing me out. Eventually I will switch to grub2, but for now I can still make do with legacy grub thanks to Adrian15.

    1. Yes, that’s right.

I have also used that trick (where, as you say, you have to make sure to overwrite the stage files with super grub disk’s ones) on some old installations myself where I don’t want to deal with Grub2 installation.

You can achieve the same functionality if you use grub legacy from Ubuntu. Probably from Ubuntu 9.04 where I got the patches but it might be another version because it was so long ago.

But, yes, probably easier to grab Super Grub Disk than searching for a grub rescue package from the ubuntu archive.

Thank you for sharing your piece of history.

  6. Friends,

The torrent link to the old 0.9799 version, does not seem to work at all, can you please help me? Thanks a lot.

  7. Their wanting the old Super Grub, because like myself, they probably don’t really care about fixing Linux. they just want it off their machine. either to try a different version or just get rid of a headache. I will have to admit though. Linux seems to be coming along nicely. I on the other hand am a 71 year old Dos Man and I am proud to say I am pleased to see there are others and they’re bringing it back.
