Safe mode by windows with dual boot Ubuntu/XP
« on: 2009/09/20, 19:48:23 pm »
Hi,

my dual boot system Ubuntu/Win XP works actually with sgd very well  :)
Nevertheless I noticed at one time, that F8 for starting Windows XP in safe mode doesn't work anymore.
How can I resolve this problem?

Thank you very much for your help

Did you install SGD manually?  ???

It seems to be a Windows XP problem. You might have another partition which it is the right partition where the normal bootloader it is? I do not know.

Maybe you have to lock F-keys with the F-lock key that it is found on some keyboards?

I do not know. This topic seems to be offtopic although I am not very sure.

Hi Adrian,

Yes I installed sgd manually after you helped me to fix another problem (after reinstalling Win XP there was no dual boot possibility any more).

I never needed to boot in safe mode till that time, until I wanted to do it some days ago and then I noticed that it doesn't work pressing F8. There is no special F-loch in my keyboard. When I press F2 for BIOS changes it works fine, so I am sure that there is no problem related with the  keyboard.
How can I investigate in which partition is located the bootloader?  ???
Thank you very much for your help,

Mario

Thank you very much for your help,

You can just use the Boot & Tools -> Boot partition option.
Have you ever thought that maybe F8 was one option from Windows 9X and that it is maybe not available at Windows XP and maybe it is another option?

Maybe you have to edit boot.ini to enable F8 key?

thank you Adrian,

please excuse me: everything is actually OK.
I tried at least 10 times to start in safe mode with F8 and it never works.
But you brought me to the idea to investigate if the F8-key could be the wrong one.
It wasn't! But in one article I read, it was also explicated that one need  a knack for starting in safe mode.
Sometimes you need to "tap tap" the key during booting, not simply press it: that was my case!
Actually nothing to do with sgd.

Best regards

Mario
